Daniel Koo,32, riding for Team Trek, snatched back his crown at the fourth annual River Raid Mountain Bike race at Samaan Park, Chaguaramas yesterday.
Last year he was second to Ryan Mendes, who did not compete this year. He was also second to Mendes in 2006 and 2007, but won the title in 2008.
Yesterday, on a new course, Koo over took Brent Edmund on the third of the five lap elite event to finish in a time of 1:10.42. Snatching second sport and also overtaking Edmund on the final lap was Rishi Ramlalack,18, who, because of this tiny size, had mouths open in disbelief. He finished in 1:11.17.
Brent Edmund, 31, who is consistently in the top four, and recently won a semi-pro contract to ride with Team Mafia.com in California, was third, in 1:16.15. Fourth was Dr. Alan Hoyte, 54, and Fifth was David Alves. Ten riders took part in this race.
Only one lady, Louise Smart, 48, took on the five lap challenge and finished in 1:34.11. She was also give the third spot in the three-lap race, completing it in 56:40.
In the three lap event, Nikolai Ho, 25, was first in 45:40; second was Ryan Abraham, 38, in 46:05, and third was Greg Downes, 28, in 46:42. Fourth was Patrick Aleong, 54 in 47:01. The female winners was Nina Chaves, 33, 55:49, and second was Maria Gooding, 20, in 56:08, after taking a spill. Thirty-four riders took part in the three-lap race.
Ross Navarro,14, Cathal Long,13, and Sebastian Navarro, 14, took the top three position in the under 15, three-lap for boys. Elizabeth Long, 22, and Maya Rahaman-Noronha, 12, took the top two spots for girls under-15. Fifteen youngsters competed in this event.
In the two-lap 10 and under category, Peter Sellier, 10, Lorenzo O’Rosco, 10, and Kristof Stuven, 9, took the top three spots, while in the girls’ division, Lily Stauble, 10, Fabiana Guedez, 8, and Johanna Andrede, 9, were the winners. There were 16 riders in this divisions.
The race was organized by the Rainbow Warriors Triathlon Club (www.rainbowtri.com), and sponsored by the Sports Company, Sing Ho Restaurant, bMobile, Mike’s Bikes, Downtown Bicycle Couriers, AMCO with products.
