More $$ in Toyota Rainbow Cup

By STEPHON NICHOLAS Thursday, May 8 2008

THE fourth annual Toyota Rainbow Cup International Triathlon and 5K is all set to take off at the Grafton Beach in Black Rock, Tobago on May 24 and will feature a new distance event.

Race Director, Jason Gooding revealed yesterday that there will not be an Olympic distance this year but a new course has been devised which will be shorter but still challenging.

The distance will be 1km swim/30km bike/7km run. This new course is expected to increase the number of participants and competition as the Olympic event has been too intimidating for the Caribbean triathletes.

The Rainbow Cup will feature triathlon races for children, teams and adults starting at 9 am and a charity 5K at 3 pm.

Toyota has increased their sponsorship for the hosting of this year’s event which will see the overall winners of the triathlon in the male and female categories taking home $4,000 each. Second place will be awarded $3,000 while third place will receive $2,000 each.

The winner of the Charity 5K in the male divisions will be awarded $3,000 while the first female across the line will take home $2,000. There will also be cash prizes for the top five finishers in the male and female categories. Special prizes will be awarded for the top school and company competing while participants wishing to complete the course as a team can register for the team relay event. Medals will be awarded to all finishers and there will be trophies for each age group winner.

Claudia Groome-Duke, The Tobago House of Assembly representative for Black Rock has chosen the Black Rock Police Youth Club to be the recipient for the Charity 5K and Gooding explained that he sees this partnership as one of the means by which spectator interest in the event will be increased in Tobago.

This year an increased participation is expected with the recent formation of the Caribbean Triathlon Union (CTU), which is committed to send a minimum of two athlete to each country’s events. Triathletes from Antigua, Suriname, Grenada, Barbados, St Kitts and Nevis, Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Martinique and TT. The defending champion from Grenada Marc de Caul will be back to defend his title in the Adults Category. The race is expected to be keenly contested as De Caul was beaten last week in Grenada by national champion Ancil Greene as well as David Hay.

Major sponsors for the event are Toyota, Tobago House of Assembly, Grafton Beach Resort, Tourism Development Company. Other sponsors are NLCB, RBTT, Blue Waters, Monster Energy Drink, Bar Code, Pelican Reef Bar & Grill, Tobago Channel 5, Radio Tambrin, Red 96.7 and Ice House.

Interested persons can register at Sports and Games in Scarborough, BarCode in Scarborough, Grafton Beach Resort in Black Rock, Geronimo’s in Woodbrook, Kenny’s Sports Centre or online at www.rainbowtri.com.
