Gooding, Greene take on Bajans Sunday

National Triathlon Champion Ancil Greene, 33, and former nine-times national champion Jason Gooding, 29, will be challenging the best of Barbados this Sunday in their National Olympic Distance Triathlon Championships. The duo will be competing against two of Barbados’ promising juniors, Jason Wilson and Mathew Wright, who have been dominating the triathlon scene over there.

But while Greene is promising to get the better of the Bajans, Gooding says that his supporters will have to wait until the T&T National Championships on April 27, to see him in full flight.

“I haven’t been training for a long time, since I had more or less retired from the sport and was concentrating on organising races and expanding my company, Odessey Timing, which times races electronically,” said Gooding. “As a matter of fact I am now recovering from an eye operation (for glaucoma), and only started training this week, would you believe.”

Gooding said he was encouraged to throw his hat back into the ring because of the recently formation of the Caribbean Triathlon Union (CTU) in Nevis two weeks ago.

“I was at that meeting,” said Gooding. “And I am very encouraged by the enthusiasm I see coming from the other islands to make this new Triathlon body work.”

The countries involved for the present include Antigua, St. Kitts/Nevis, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Grenada, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. Those expected to join later will include Jamaica, Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Suriname. “One of the CTU’s decisions is to have a minimum if at least two athletes from each member country competing at each country’s major event,” said Gooding. “And a CTU championship will be held once a year in one of the countries on a rotating basis. This year it will be held in Antigua on December 14. And next year it will be in Barbados.”
